West Bromwich Albion assistant Keith Downing has spoken of his delight at seeing Roy Hodgson named England manager.
Hodgson was appointed England boss on Tuesday, signing a four-year deal, but will see out the English Premier League season at West Brom.
Speaking ahead of West Brom s trip to Bolton on Sunday, Downing said he was thrilled to see Hodgson given the job.
Not surprised because of the mark of the man and the qualities that he has. It was obviously very much driven for Harry (Redknapp) nationally and that was thought that he would be the first choice, Downing said.
But from a football perspective, I ve been working with the man for 15 months so I wasn t surprised that he, certainly, would have an interview.
But to be straight in there for number one, I m delighted for him. I think it s the pinnacle of his career.
He s had a fantastic career, managing all around the world, it s a pinnacle and I m delighted for him because he s a conscientious man and a very humble man.
Downing, who managed Cheltenham Town in 2007 and 2008, ruled himself out of taking over at West Brom, but could join Hodgson at England.
I will not put myself forward for the Albion job. It is for someone who has a bit more experience at this moment in time, Downing said.
Will I being going to England? There are a lot of questions to be answered. We will prepare for the end of the season and then see what happens.
